My name is Gavin Chura. I was born in New York, grew up in Indiana, and now live in Chicago.
As an artist, I am drawn to the geometric world – more specifically architecture; I enjoy the concept of structure, but am not dependent on it. Structures are not constant – they can always be modified, altered, and improved. The concept of an altered structure is what draws me to the seemingly limitless possibilities of architecture. The structures around us (and those that are soon to come) are in a constant state of modification, some only minor while some exceeding the ordinary. Through my art, I attempt to translate this idea by creating modified, altered, and improved versions of some of our nation’s most renowned structures. Throughout my process of creating architectural paintings, my intent is to encourage the viewer to focus on the details that are absent from the entirety of a specific structure. With drips and splatters, dark lines, mid-tones and slight distortion, I provide a foundation to which the viewer is able to complete the painting with their own recollection or imagination. Important features are emphasized in detail while other features may seem entirely absent, or are less obvious to the naked eye.
