I’m Gayla Sears, a retired bakery owner with a lifelong love of baking, family traditions, and bringing people together through food.

I was born in Savannah, Georgia, where some of my earliest memories were made in the kitchen with my mother and grandmother. They taught me how to bake from scratch, but they also taught me something more important: good food takes patience, care, and practice. Many of the recipes I still treasure today were handwritten and passed down through generations of my family.

After graduating from Savannah High School, I continued my education in food service and hospitality. I later began working in local bakeries, learning both the craft of baking and the day-to-day realities of running a food business. In the early 1970s, I opened my own neighborhood bakery and went on to operate it for more than 35 years.

Over the years, I became especially known for traditional Southern favorites such as cinnamon rolls, biscuits, pecan pie, apple cake, pound cake, sugar cookies, and cobbler. I also enjoyed teaching younger bakers and sharing the techniques that had been passed down to me.

Although I’m retired now, baking is still a big part of my life. I continue to bake for family, friends, community events, fundraisers, and special occasions. I also spend time preserving old recipe cards and organizing family recipes so they can be shared with future generations.

Outside the kitchen, I enjoy gardening, reading, antiquing, local history, embroidery, and spending time with family and friends. I’ve always believed that some of life’s most meaningful moments happen around a table, with good food, good conversation, and people you care about.
