Geoff Tyler
There is no "I" in "news", however, depending how you look at it, there is "we." I am all about teamwork and stepping up to fill in wherever the need may be. Whatever hours you need me to work, I will work. Wherever you are short on personnel (assignment desk,sports,anchor,etc..),I will fill in.Whatever you need done, I will do.
My innate abilities are what I believe set me apart from other candidates. I am naturally a positive and energetic person who is perceptive of those around me. I have an intense work ethic and enjoy bringing creativity to all projects. I have a nose for hard news, a hunger for breaking news "lives", and a natural ability to sense when someone is telling the truth or lying.
At KHGI, I was a weekend one-man-band reporter and weekday photographer. As the months went on I was given more and more days of the week to report.
An unbelievable opportunity arose, News 8 Austin offered the opportunity of learning big market skills. The opportunity of working in Austin was too great to resist. I learned lighting, advanced level shooting techniques, and that there was no room for error in editing. Have you ever tried editing 34 vo/sots and 3 packages in a day? I did that ,and I did not have a single mistake in any of the 37 stories. I also had the opportunity to shoot a lot of breaking news. It was great!
Still, I missed reporting. KMID offered that opportunity, but there was a catch. With no evening photographer, I had to pick up the slack. I filled both positions. A package and 5-7 vo/sots a day. My shooting speed had to catch up with my editing. Have you ever shot a vo/sot, including interview, in 3 minutes? I did.
Omaha came calling. No contract, just a work offer. Still, KMTV offered me the opportunity to do hard news stories, and work on my "live shot" abilities. Going live for multiple newscasts, the opportunity to have the top story at 6, and the opportunity to use trending technology was a dream come true. Unfortunately, some staffing choices and my lack of an actual contract led to my dismissal.
Over the years, I have constantly worked to further for the live, local and late breaking news coverage on air and on station websites using multiple social platforms including Twitter and Facebook. At KMID, I started the first ever reporter updates on Twitter. At KMTV, I used Smartphones and laptops with live streaming capabilities to get news out first and fast.
