Snorkeling with

Stingrays

is one of the unique adventures that you only get to experience in the

Cayman Islands

. No other location on the planet has the same blend of environmental features which foster the many schools of large stingrays that call the islands home. It's the perfect excursion for children and adults alike, and a rare opportunity to get a first-hand glimpse of some of the most interesting animals on the planet.

At the same time, many people who are not as familiar with stingrays may harbour some reservations about getting close and personal with the admittedly intimidating creatures.

Getting to Stingray City

The area with the highest natural density of stingrays is referred to as Stingray City or Stingray Sandbar. It is located in the North Sound of the Grand Cayman Island and is your best bet if you're dead set on seeing a huge number of stingrays. Because of various policies designed to protect the local flora and fauna, visitors are ferried to the spot by way of the catamaran, instead of a larger vessel.

Feeding Frenzy

The presence of a great abundance of stingrays will let you know when you've entered the city limits of Stingray City. These large and docile creatures are easily visible from the catamarans, as they like to glide around slowly in the crystal clear waters.

Guides will often bait the water with squid to attract even more stingrays. While the resulting flurry of action might look dangerous, there's no need to be afraid - the stingrays are far more interested in the squid than in humans.
