Driving a Rental Car in Mexico

When you rent a car in Mexico, there are some things you’ll need to be prepared for at the rental office, including potentially surprising mandatory insurance costs, the possibility of slower paperwork processing, and so on. Once you’ve tackled the actual process of renting the car, there’s something else you need to prepare yourself for: driving in a foreign and most likely unfamiliar country. Important documents in your Mexican rental car

Make a copy of any insurance documents you have from your home country, as well as the Personal Liability Insurance and Collision Damage Waiver coverage you purchased from the rental car agency upon your arrival in Mexico. Keep these documents in the glove box of the car at all times – if you can’t prove you have PLI coverage at the scene of an accident, you could be taken to jail until you can procure this documentation.
