Coach Glen Fanelli

University of West Alabama

Glen Fanelli, a native of Kentucky, brings eight years of head coaching experience and 12 years in the coaching profession to UWA with stints at Montevallo, Wallace State Community College, Samford and Alabama.

Fanelli, who started the tennis program at Montevallo, served as the women’s tennis coach there from 1995-1996 before taking the reins at Wallace State.
During his four years at Wallace State he led both programs to prominence. The women’s program claimed the 1999 AJCCC title and also captured the NJCAA National Championship. The men’s team also claimed the AJCCC crown that year and finished third in the NJCAA National Tournament. Fanelli was honored as the NJCAA National Coach of the Year for leading both programs.
After his success at the community college level, Fanelli took the helm at Samford University for four seasons and led those programs to wins over Southern Mississippi, Lehigh, Southwest Louisiana, Florida A&M, Alabama State, Springhill, Jacksonville State, Birmingham-Southern, Morehead State, Jacksonville University (FL) and Eastern Kentucky.
After a playing career at the University of Kentucky, Fanelli served as an assistant coach at Alabama from 1987-88, where he coached two, two-time All-Americans in Clinton Ferreria and Ellis Ferreria. During his time at Alabama the Crimson Tide finished 25th nationally and fifth in the SEC.
While at the University of West Alabama, Coach Fanelli has broken all the win records in the tennis archives for both of his men’s and women’s teams. His men posting a 23-4 win loss season in 2013, Runner-up in the Gulf South Conference, a trip to the NCAA tournament for his fourth time as coach at UWA, and with a national ranking of 27, which is the highest ranking ever in the history of UWA tennis.
The women’s team meanwhile set of record of 19 wins and 9 losses, qualified for the Gulf South Conference for six years in a row, finished 4th in the GSC and finished 10th in the NCAA South Region, with a win over #37 West Virginia State.
During his tenure as head coach at UWA Coach Fanelli has been able to break his own record in wins for both teams each year, continuing to improve the status of UWA tennis nationally. Since coming to UWA, he has helped 11 women gain All-GSC honors, and 2 All-GSC honors for the men. His over-all combined men and women’s record at UWA as head coach is 210 wins & 118 losses. Men have had 3 final national rankings 27
