The title of this interview is one of the most basic truths in education. However, it is also one of the most difficult truths to handle and respond to. In my heart, I know that, in order to help students (and teachers and communities) realize their full potentials, personalized/individualized lessons and education will be critical. If I’m honest though, it scares me. It scares me as a teacher, as a future parent, and as a potential future school leader. I think it scares me because it’s so unknown. Sure, it’s exciting for the same reason and (thanks to Clayton Christensen and Michael Horn’s essaypro reviews) I understand (or at least I am closer to understanding) the role of technology in providing the opportunity for personalized education depending on experience, learning type, and other factors. Still, I struggle to see it differently from how I see a diet or exercise plan…I know it’s good and I know it’s right and I know it can be very helpful (and even necessary), but it’s just scary/unknown enough to make the jump and say, yes, let’s make it happen now.
