Gia Alexander

College Station, Texas

Background and Education

I am currently a graduate student in Textual Studies and Book History at Texas Tech University. I plan to complete my doctorate in 2014.

I was born in northwest Indiana and grew up near Chicago. In 1984, my family and I moved to Louisiana to escape the bad Chicago weather.

I attended Northwestern State University of Louisiana at Natchitoches, where I majored in English and graduated Summa Cum Laude in May 1989. I then proceeded to graduate school at Texas A&M University at College Station, where I earned my master's degree in English in August 1991.

For the next twelve years, I worked as an English teacher, technical writer, editor, grant writer, and communications specialist, alternating between The Texas A&M University System and Blinn College.

Since 2001, I have worked in direct support, family business, and community-based non-profit roles, didn't like any of them, and so returned to academe in the spring of 2014.

Community Involvement

Being involved in my community is one of my core values. To this end, I volunteer as a Benefits Counselor with my local Area Agency on Aging.

Hobbies and Interests

I enjoy art journaling, journal writing, and breeding/raising Chihuahua-mix dogs.
