Gil Schwartzberg currently works as a consultant with a biotech company he cofounded called Lixte Biotechnology Holdings. This company works to create better cancer treatment. Gil has worked in the field of cancer research and treatment long before founding Lixte.

Ever since his mother passed away due to a deadly brain tumor called glioblastoma multiforme when he was a child, Schwartzberg has feltstronglyabout cancer research and treatment. He works hard to find a cure.

Schwartzberg discovered a cancer research and treatment facility called City of Hope (COH) National Medical Center and soon became an active member of the COH staff and community.

In 1977, Gil became a member of City of Hope’s Professions and Finance support auxiliary. As a member of this group, Schwartzberg worked hard to raise money for cancer research.

His membership within City of Hope grew as he joined the Center’s National Board of Directors and even founded a second support auxiliary called the Inner Circle of City of Hope. The Inner Circle was comprised of the Center’s major financial contributors.

Gil Schwartzberg became the board chairman of City of Hope in 1995, and three years later he was offered the position of CEO. He is the only volunteer in COH history to be offered both positions. He took the position of CEO, in which he oversaw the distribution of large donations appointed researchers, and more.

As Board Chairman he oversaw the recruitment of Dr. John “Jack” Kovach. Kovach would later become COH’s executive vice president and chief of medicine and science and would be responsible for the City of Hope earning its designation as an NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center. It was Dr. Kovach with whom Gil would later found Lixte Biotechnology Holdings, Inc.

In 2003, Schwartzberg received a Doctor of Science Degree from City of Hope’s Graduate School of Biological Sciences, making him the first person to ever receive this type of degree from the school. Gil will also retain the honorary title of Chairman Emeritus at City of Hope for life.
