Gina Wymore
Teacher and mentor in Port-au-Prince, Haiti
I'm a teacher, mentor, crafter, traveler, hiker, explorer, disc golfer, camping fanatic, and cooking enthusiast, while learning to be a pseudo mother to 40 amazing children in Haiti.
I promote simple, natural, ecofriendly living. I’m an animal lover, amateur gardener, and book worm on a quest to unceasingly grow and learn. I'm an advocate for minimalism and find the greatest happiness in the experiences we have and the relationships we make. I have a passion for helping underprivileged children and believe education is the key to a brighter future.
Michigan born, I'm proud to represent “the mitten” in the Caribbean. Raised in an affluent Detroit suburb, I journeyed to rustic Mount Pleasant, Michigan to pursue a teaching degree at Central Michigan University. After graduating, I moved to beautiful Leelanau County in northern Michigan where my heart remains. Destined to return to the great lakes one day, I vowed to see the world first.
Travel has become a life necessity. Various trips to Haiti and Africa have been humbling, life changing experiences. Backpacking throughout Europe became eye opening, bestowing insight I could have never read about. Camping throughout the states has instilled an appreciation for Mother Earth's beauty that I had never before fathomed. Exposing myself to different cultures, languages, laws, politics, religions, schools, and people has altered my entire life perspective.
I’ve recently moved to Haiti’s capital where I’m living and teaching at an orphanage. Despite my colossal apprehension to leave home, it’s proven to be an amazing experience. With God's help, I continue to embrace each challenge that strengthens me. I’m forever grateful for the amazing children that touch my life on a daily basis. I’ve found the things we’re most afraid of in life end up being the most rewarding.
