Everything began in the theatre. The very first experience I had in any kind of entertainment was doing theatre arts in high school. That class was so much fun and I had a such a great time doing plays and rehearsing with all my friends that it largely influenced my decision to pursue acting past high school.
As I went through film school and beyond, I branched out and tried pretty much everything else -- screenwriting, journalism, producing, casting, and talent management. That has led me to work at a variety of places including a talent casting agency, an NFL blog news site, an entertainment trade magazine, a film festival, and a science museum.
I even studied sketch comedy writing at the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York for a few months.
Early in 2014 I got my own camera for the first time, a Nikon D7000. I discovered that I liked taking pictures of people and capturing the essence of who that person is, so I made portrait photography my focus. I think that working at the casting agency had something to do with that, since I looked at thousands of headshots while I was there and I saw what made a good portrait stand out from the rest.
Since then, I've obsessively tried to get good enough so that my portraits could be in magazines. Whenever I read a fashion magazine, I look at the advertisements and try to break down how they constructed that picture; lighting, position of the models, background, etc. I hope that someday my work could be in a magazine like GQ, or Vogue, or Vanity Fair. That would be pretty cool.
Acting was the first thing I ever tried in entertainment, and I'm not sure I will ever get away from that completely. The thrill and excitement of being on stage or in front of the camera, full costume, all the props, lights on you and your cast mates is equally as fulfilling for me as taking a great portrait. When the house lights go down (for stage) or the director yells "action" (for film), you know it's showtime and the magic begins. I love that.
For now, I will see where this photography adventure goes. My current project is a photo booth company that I started with my cousin called SnapShopSF. Feel free to see my work so far at my website below. I am available to do your portraits, if you're interested please email me and we can schedule something!
