Glappit Crew

In 2007, Nicholas Brown began to see the potential in his classmates, teammates, and friends to become successful and contributing citizens in the real world. As a way to explore, learn, and inspire other likeminded individuals, he created the Facebook group ‘Young and Powerful’ to story the success, goals, causes, and inspirations of these individuals and/ or organizations he had encountered throughout his collegiate experience. The group quickly grew with followers and contributors with backgrounds/ interests ranging from All-American athletes to Molecular Cellular Biologists and recent graduates. Based on the popularity of Nick’s ‘Young and Powerful’ Facebook group, in 2008 he teamed up with classmates Michael Webb and David Spencer to enter a similar idea into the 2008 Innovate Illinois competition. The team was eliminated in later rounds as the competition favored the finalists to be established companies. We did however receive great feedback, and were encouraged enough to pursue the idea further. Since the competition; social media research has been conducted and tested, through the Young and Powerful Facebook group. Some of those members have become Olympians, lawyers, artists, doctors, entrepreneurs, and teachers. Many credit that group being inspiring and has opened the door to more opportunities, through connections with others. As time progressed, that group reached many individuals, although content and interaction began to fade due to Nick’s focus on his degree and competing in track and field. Following graduation, Nick revisited this concept believing it still had potential to be beneficial for everyone. This spawned the creation of Glappit.
