GENRE: Literary / Crime
SUMMARY: Gene Campbell is on the run; a fugitive in South America.
As the authorities close in, Gene moves from town to town, addicted to opiates, and mixing with the underbelly of South American society. After a failed suicide attempt he finds Alcoholics Anonymous and begins a slow journey towards recovery. But as his life progresses, he is haunted by memories of the traumatic incidents that caused him to flee.
He returns to the UK to confront his ghosts and relives the events that brought about his demise.
FEEDBACK ON FIRST DRAFT: 'It's clear to me that you are a hugely capable writer, and that this novel has genuine potential.
'Gene is a complicated and extremely well-realised protagonist. He is deeply flawed and at times supremely selfish, yet we sense in him a vulnerability and an almost painful desire to be good. This inner-conflict sustains our interest in him, even if we are never able to quite trust him.
'At its best, your writing is brilliant.
'I suspect the second draft will have a good chance of being picked up by an agent / publisher.'
Nathan Filer, author of ‘The Shock of the Fall’, which won several major literary awards, including the Costa Book of the Year and the Betty Trask Prize. It was a Sunday Times Bestseller.
‘I loved so much of this writing! It’s got a very direct, energetic, pacey, feel, helped by the present tense, the focus on the lively alcoholic, Gene, and a comic element offset by pathos and what feels like an authentic rendition of his journey toward recovery.’
Gavin Cologne-Brookes, author of ‘The Novels of William Styron: From Harmony to History’ and ‘Dark Eyes on America: The Novels of Joyce Carol Oates’.
