Hello! My name is Glenn Squires, and I want to explore an aspect of my life that pushed me to learn new things and become better in the future, which helped me overcome challenging obstacles during my college year.
As shown in the image, I was a freshman in high school when I decided to give marching band a try. I am playing my alto saxophone as I stay in this set for several measures before I have to move to my next set on the football field, displaying different shapes with other fellow marchers to amaze the audience in the stands.
At the start of my experience in the marching band, I had little confidence in my demeanor, struggled to play notes without a sheet in front of me, and carried a deep feeling that I would never improve for the rest of high school besides the rest of the students who could memorize music quicker than me or march more perfectly than me.
It was unacceptable for me to compare myself to other people who might have a higher advantage over me in band. I focused on myself every day and practiced repeatedly before rehearsals. I memorized my music notes for each song in either my bedroom or the practice room after class, and I made my feet march wherever I went, whether it was to the bathroom or my next class.
I improved year after year until my band director saw the potential in me to become a leader in my saxophone section during my senior year. Now, I can memorize anything easily, learn new skills quickly, and I am confident in fixing my mistakes even if I make them in front of people. It is crucial to improve myself instead of examining my colleagues.
