In the comments to my previous post, a question arose about the classification of smoothbore and glock 22 conversion barrel. Guided by another comment, I decided to write a post on the classification of weapons.

There are no generally accepted standards, but in general, if the barrel is short - the weapon is short-barreled, if the long one is the long-barreled

In the Russian Federation, a long-barreled weapon is a weapon whose receiver is at least 50 cm long, and the total length of the weapon must be at least 80 cm.

In general, for the sake of simplicity, we can say that long-barreled weapons - guns, rifles; short-barreled weapons - pistols, submachine guns, etc.

In addition, there is a barrelless weapon - for example, the most famous traumatic pistol in the Russian Federation.

The role of the barrel in it is performed by the cartridge itself. The lack of a full-fledged barrel cannot but affect the accuracy and range of the projectile, however, with such a caliber, it is not important.

The barrel of the weapon can be smooth or rifled. In the first case , as the name suggests, the inner surface of the trunk is smooth. Such weapons usually have a fairly large caliber. The most popular smooth gauge in the world is the 12, which is essentially the hunting standard.

As a rule, such weapons are fired with shot or buckshot. The absence of any obstacles is very important for a shot, otherwise it will deform.

Sometimes they shoot with bullets, but there are some nuances here:

Accuracy suffers greatly due to lack of stabilization

Bullet cartridges for smooth-bore weapons are many times more expensive than rifled

With a bullet, they usually hunt large animals, such as an elk, or simply carry them with them in case such animals attack during the hunt.

There are also traumatic 12 gauge cartridges. The bulletin them also has a huge size and impact, despite the reduced crimp. powder charge, it turns out to be very strong.

Such cartridges have no penetrating ability at all, which will not cause serious harm to health, but the blow is so strong that, I think, one hit will be enough for the attacker to reflect on his behavior.

I fired a similar cartridge at a five-liter plastic bottle - there was no direct glock 22 conversion barrel
penetration, but it cracked full width from the impact.
