Gloria Gibson
Former University President
President of Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) from July 2018 to June 2023, Gloria Gibson holds a B.A. and an M.A. in music education from Southern Illinois University and a Ph.D. in folklore and ethnomusicology concentration from Indiana University.
While serving as president of NEIU, Ms. Gibson focused on enhancing educational access for students in the Chicago area, as well as expanding to new international and regional areas. Working closely with campus leaders, she endeavored to provide an excellent educational experience for students. Ms. Gibson was also committed to improving the Office of Careers Services, with the aim of increasing connectivity between employers and university students.
From January 2015 to June 2018, Ms. Gibson served as senior vice president and provost at Morgan State University, Baltimore, reporting directly to the university president. During this time, she established the Provost’s Transition Task Force to identify key issues regarding setting priorities and goals, set up the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, and provided leadership and advocacy to pilot course redesigns in freshman math and English, among other accomplishments.
As executive vice president and provost of the University of Northern Iowa from July 2009 to June 2014, Ms. Gibson promoted academic excellence by providing professional development opportunities for faculty and leadership for the university’s successful application for Higher Learning Commission reaccreditation.
When she’s not working, Ms. Gibson enjoys traveling, reading, walking, listening to music, gardening, strength training, and yoga.
