How did GFL get going and why do the Library Scribes believe they have a great idea?

It has taken some 25 Years to reach the moment of opening our GFL, clocking up hours and hours of searching for gluten free
Information and more importantly sourcing quality, wholesome and nutritious ‘foodstuffs’ that were edible!
Now, we genuinely believe we have gained sufficient experience and indeed have rather earned our ‘gluten free wings’ that we really believe we can offer an excellent additional service to those searchers and seekers – just like us – that are looking for really good producers and manufacturers of all quality and tasty things gluten!

Yes, of course and thankfully nowadays most of the angst has been taken out of the Weekly/Monthly shopping trip for those on a gluten free diet with increased awareness and marketing as to what is considered gluten free. Coeliac UK has helped enormously in raising the ‘coeliacness profile’ and pioneering the gluten free symbol **Pic GF symbol.

One person in 100 is now diagnosed as having ‘coeliacs disease’ as opposed to one in 1500 when I was first diagnosed 25 Years ago, so at least the isolation and label of just being another annoying food fad dieter has gone.
Indeed with the increasing numbers of other food intolerant and allergy sufferers this has encouraged the Food Industry to give much more credence and attention to the growing gluten free market.

Another reason which spurred us on to coming up with the GFL idea was that Baking with gluten free flour was/is very difficult and it is fair to say involves a completely different’ mindset’-which my long suffering Husband can lament about for hours! Indeed after numerous restaurant disasters dining out became pretty hit and miss as it was just too much of a problem to get really good scrummy gluten free food so home baking seemed the safer and better alternative! After finding Books for Cooks in the Portobello Road which ensued some salvation with the discovery of a few wonderful American recipe cookbook writers and the wonderful gem we found in the late Canadian writer, Betty Hagman who was widely acknowledged as the gluten free recip
