Gabriel Casuga
choral conductor and Music Ministry Coordinator in Manila, Philippines
Hello to all! I am Gabriel Casuga, a full-time church musician, choir conductor, and composer of liturgical music. Since 2016, I have worked in the choral and church music fields, and I have taken part in numerous initiatives pertaining to music in Catholic liturgy. I am a choral arranger as well, and I love any genre that has been adapted for choral music, such as popular music, ethnic music, and so on.
I always live by a principle that embraces the beauty of church and choral music in my work as a church and choral musician. As stipulated here:
Liturgical worship is given a more noble form when it is celebrated in song, with the ministers of each degree fulfilling their ministry and the people participating in it. Indeed, through this form, prayer is expressed in a more attractive way, the mystery of the liturgy, with its hierarchical and community nature, is more openly shown, the unity of hearts is more profoundly achieved by the union of voices, minds are more easily raised to heavenly things by the beauty of the sacred rites, and the whole celebration more clearly prefigures that heavenly liturgy which is enacted in the holy city of Jerusalem (No. 5 of Musicam Sacram, 1967).
I assert that this should be extended through any genre of music using these guiding principles and the church music genre as my baseline. We can create an unifying sound that expresses diversity and culture with the right knowledge about each genre.
