Politically Correct versus Freedom of Speech

We survive tragedies of life by seeing the funny side. We laugh to preserve our sanity.

Aristophanes is credited as the first comedy writer; he began poking fun at the pompous officials and their institutions around 400 BC. The Thought Police of the day were assigned to get him.

Today we find another crusade antagonistic to free speech under the guise of being Politically Correct. It is mounted by the usual scoundrels, the jingoist patriots and the priests who still wish they could burn heretics at the stake.

If an anti-Irish or an anti-Jewish joke is banned, who decides when an anti-Nazi joke is offensive? And who decides when anti-politician jokes are forbidden? The politicians?

Ethnic humour is here to stay as long as we divide ourselves into national, religious, racial and cultural groups. But that of course, include all of us.
