Marta Thoma Hall earned her B.A. in Fine Arts from the University of California, Berkley. Since graduation, she has become a nationally recognized public artist. Several of her sculptures and paintings can be viewed in cities across the US and even overseas. One of her more famous sculptures is titled “Go Mama.” Located in Palo Alto, California, this piece was inspired by the writing of Julia Kristeva about maternity. Hall believes that the maternal can be valorized and accomplishes this idea with her sculpture representing the female experience and psyche for wisdom and enlightenment. It also expresses the complexities of the parent-child relationship as one figure is a baby and the other is a rag doll. The figures suggest the never-ending work of the parent and that the child and mother are one creature. The sculpture is made of steel and glass bottles to reflect light and color in subtle passages such as the similarities between caring for the earth and maternal care taking.

Hall’s passion for art and design also contributed to her success as a businesswoman. She became the Chief Creative Officer for Velodyne and oversees the work in all areas of the business. Her aesthetic and love of fine arts is beneficial to Velodyne’s LiDAR technology because she drives the company’s vision and business strategy through creative marketing methods and artistic designs. This technology is used in autonomous vehicles, vehicle safety systems, 3D mobile mapping, 3D aerial mapping, and security. A goal Hall has is to produce and equip every car with LiDAR sensors world-wide. This intention would increase autonomous driving, and thus, reduces the amount of accidents and lowers the cost of insurance. Hall works alongside the Founder and CEO and together with a close-knit team of staff, they are constantly growing and improving Velodyne.
