I am best known for my freelance features work for Jakarta Globe and travel writing for Indonesia Expat. Currently traveling back and forth between Jakarta, Indonesia and Wellington, New Zealand, where I am working towards my Master of Development Studies and am due to finish in June 2016. I conducted fieldwork for my research with the Amungme Highlanders of Mimika, West Papua on Empowering Narratives: Development with Identity for Post-Mining Indigenous Resilience
The manuscript of my first book, Dongeng dari Nusa-Nusa Selatan (Fairytales from the Southern Isles) is currently being reviewed by a major Indonesian publisher. Despite the title, it is a non-fictional travel and romance memoir on a multicultural urban Indonesian's search for the meaning of home and making sense of her nation's multiple realities—in real places that are surprisingly reminiscent of those one would read about in children's fairy tales. The story, which began with my failure to reach my long dreamed of ancestral homeland on an unannounced holiday, is based on my journeys in Timor, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Flores and Bali within the six months leading up to my departure for New Zealand.
For leisure I enjoy low budget backpacking trips that last for months, music, the arts, indie film festivals, traditional Indonesian textiles, yoga, Thai kickboxing, swimming and photography.
I am interested in opportunities in freelance writing, non-technical work for start-ups, NGO projects advocating indigenous empowerment or conservation, consulting, ghostwriting, research, teaching, multimedia collaborations, and possibly documentary film work. I work best in English and several dialects of Indonesian, and am conversational in Dutch and Low Javanese.
