Alberto Granell
Odontologist in Spain
Hi, I’m Alberto. I’m an Odontologist living in and working in Spain in a Dental Clinic. Various bacteria are present in the mouth, including those associated with dental caries, periodontal (gum) diseases and systemic diseases that affect general health. These bacteria are usually kept under control by good oral hygiene such as daily brushing and flossing. When harmful bacteria grow uncontrollably, they can cause infections in the gums, making the oral cavity an entry point into the bloodstream. The mouth is the window to the health of the body. The mouth reflects signs and symptoms of health and disease, and even some diseases that affect the body as a whole may first manifest themselves in the oral cavity. We can also see some lesions in the mouth, which can alert us to vitamin deficiency, lack of some minerals or poor nutrition. The link between oral health and its effects on the body is now not only undisputed, but has been proven in numerous studies. What happens in the mouth can affect the rest of the body, and what happens in the rest of the body can have effects on the mouth. In other words, oral health is important and is related to general health and well-being.
