I have always been involved in some form of physical activity growing up. Over the years, sports have come and gone, with new teammates, coaches, skills, and injuries. Some of my first memories are from when I played tee ball in pre-k. I don’t remember if I was any good, but as I’m not currently D-1 in tee ball, I was probably average for a 4-year-old. The only interesting thing that came about during this time was that the coaches did not know I was left-handed, so I have been a little ambidextrous since. I tried baseball and basketball in elementary school, neither of which I was very fond of. It wasn’t until third grade, when I signed up for football, that I found my sport. Football has had one of the biggest influences on my life, and it has shaped a lot of my identity. Continuing on once I hit middle school, my mother took it upon herself to sign me up for the swim team. I was against this, but I took to it over time, narrowly missing state one year. From sixth to twelfth grade, I would leave football season and jump right into the pool with bad shoulders. After this came the big decision for college. I knew I would be going based on academics, but I didn’t know what it would be like to not be involved in a sport. Then, a sport I had only really heard of a few times came up through an older friend attending the University. Rugby, a sport that I wrongly assumed was only played in Australia and New Zealand had a team at UGA. Knowing nothing about the sport, I jumped in head first with nothing to lose. After just three practices, only one of which included contact, I was thrown into a game. I was utterly lost for the first time. After some more time on the “pitch”, I found an appreciation for the sport as well as new challenges.
