I often wonder if the name Jacob Hale is fitting for a career in the film industry. All of the filmmaking behemoths, Alfred Hitchcock, David Fincher, have these intriguing yet balanced names that are only fitting for someone of a bohemian lifestyle. When I hear the three off-putting syllables of my name, I think of a mid-level executive opting to forgo an emotionally fulfilling career for the security of a paycheck. This thought says a lot about how I feel about my life. I tend to resent things that don’t fall in line with my goals. Recently I took a personality test, hoping it would give some sort insight into the way I think. According to the test, I fit into the mold of a Mediator and one of the cornerstone archetypes of the Mediator is the need to perceive every situation with an endgame in mind. So naturally, it’s hard for me to accept even the most minuscule details of my life if I don’t think that they are pointing me towards the desired endgame of a successful career in filmmaking. This thought process has often made it difficult to enjoy the monotonous soul-searching atmosphere of college. While I may, at first, be intrigued by social and academic opportunities such as joining a fraternity and taking classes that do not directly pertain to my major, it is difficult for me to stay focused and put in the effort required to succeed in these activities because when the fascination fades they tend to seem more like distractions from my true goals. This thought process is curiously similar to how I develop a cohesive message throughout my films and even my writing, constantly trimming the unnecessary fat until only the meat of the grander story is left for the viewer.
