Greg Davenport
I have been taking photos since I was exposed to (pun intended :-) a Nikon F 35mm film SLR camera in 5th grade. Photography became a "hobby" as a pre-teen, got more serious about imaging as a teen, and followed me through college, the military, and my entire adult life so far. At Fort Bragg I was exposed to a Dycam Model 1, and as an an engineer I was officially hooked by digital imaging technology.
The first device that I created 'serious' and marketable digital images with were with the Sony Mavica (MVC-FD5) I purchased in 1998 - which I still have in storage. That Sony device had a 1 Megabyte 3.5 inch floppy disk for image storage and transfer to computer - state of the art at the time. I also used an array of compact point-and-shoot digital cameras (Nikon / Sony / Samsung / Olympus) in the interim of Nikon marketing an - affordable - entry market DSLR camera. For instance, in 1999 when the Nikon D1 was released on the market as a 'affordable' DSLR at $5,000, it was hard for me to get my head wrapped around $5,000 as being affordable.
Eventually purchased an 'affordable' Nikon D40 DX; this device gave me an opportunity to familiarize myself with the navigation and use of software and hardware available for DSLR imaging. In November of 2009 I unloaded the D40 and upgraded to a Nikon D5000 DX. In Dec, 2010 I added a Nikon D3100 DX as a backup Nikon body for my imaging arsenal (always good to have a back-up). I eventually unloaded the D5000 and upgraded to the D5100 DX in June 2011. Lastly, Made the move into full frame DSLR imaging with the purchase of D700 FX in Sept. 2011 - which has been proven to be a superlative tool for my creative imaging expression. Also added a Nikon 1 Mirror-Less cameras to my bag in April 2013.
After shooting for 46 years, photography is more than a novice hobby, it is part of what I do. I have developed a market for my photography (global travel, urban and landscapes, jazz culture, as well as the occasional wedding). I do not present to you that Nikon is 'better' than Canon, Pentax, or any other camera manufacturer, as you can see from this chronology I have shared, Nikon has simply been my camera of choice since ten years of age.
