In the heart of Jackson, Wyoming, a unique non-profit organization called the Center of Wonder stands as a testament to the power of creative leadership and community advocacy. Originally known as the Wonder Institute, the organization’s mission is to empower creative leaders and champion the arts and innovative education throughout the Jackson Hole area. The Center of Wonder believes that a vibrant community is built on collaboration and partnerships, and their work reflects this core philosophy.

Since its founding in 2007, the Center of Wonder has focused on providing vital community spaces, offering innovative programming, and supporting local artists, schools, and organizations. They’ve built trust with creators and leaders in the community, enabling them to achieve their highest potential. Their work is a blend of hands-on educational programs, financial support for artists, and community-driven projects that make art and creativity accessible to everyone.

Pioneering Programs and Initiatives

The Center of Wonder is well-known for its diverse range of programs that cater to various creative fields and age groups.

• Wonder Labs: These are dedicated community spaces focused on creativity, innovation, and imagination. The main Wonder Lab includes a digital media lab, a maker space, and a robotics lab with state-of-the-art equipment like 3-D printers and CNC routers. The organization has partnered with the Teton School District to involve over 500 students in their robotics program, fostering a love for science and technology from a young age.
• Creative Leaders: The Center of Wonder recognizes the crucial role of educators and creative figures in the community. Through their annual Educator Awards, they provide recognition and financial awards to teachers in Teton County who are selected by their students for their contributions.
• Civic Outreach: This initiative provides free educational programs, including speaker programs and civic education initiatives like the “We the People” program and the National Stock Market game. This helps to promote civic engagement and financial literacy among students.
• Grant Programs: An important source of funding for local arts and education, the grant program supports a variety of projects, including artists-in-residence programs and educational initiatives. Since its inception, this program has awarded over $1,000,000 in grants and awards to more than 67 artists and organizations, reaching tens of thousands of community participants.
• Live Performance Fund: The Center of Wonder underwrites the cost for K-12 students in the Teton County School District to attend a live arts performance each year at the Center for the Arts. For many students, this is their very first experience with a live performance, making it a foundational moment in their creative development.
