My Three Priorities for Finsbury Park
Community Safety
As a resident of Finsbury Park, I truly understand how much community safety matters to all of us. Over the past two weeks, members have shared with me their concerns regarding antisocial behaviour, drug use, and street cleaning.
If selected and elected, I will work with members and residents to ensure services such as.
- Safer Neighbourhood Team, Councils Communtiy Safety Partnership are held accountable and local residents are heard.
- Consistent and visible leadership as your councillor in consistently addressing this issue.
- Strong Partnership with local organisations, residents and local police.
Improving Standards of our Council Stock
Housing continues to be a huge issue for residents across the borough. Islington Labour continue to prioritise building new homes to tackle the housing crisis; however, improving our council stock remains equally important. As your local Cllr I will;
- Work closely with Tenants and Residents Associations (TRAs) and housing cooperatives to address specific issues, such as maintenance issues and community safety.
- Conduct an assessment of the homes in Finsbury Park for damp and mould, and ensure necessary repairs are completed.
- An overview of our existing council stock estates in Finsbury Park, focusing on improvement works and addressing outstanding repairs with the housing team to reduce the backlog.
Cost of Living Crisis
The cost-of-living crisis is impacting residents across the borough, resulting in fuel and food poverty, rising rents, and increasing homelessness. As Chair of the Children’s Scrutiny Committee and a member of the Corporate Resources and Economy Scrutiny Committee, tackling poverty and inequality, will be at the forefront of my work as a councillor. As your local Cllr I will;
- Work with communities most affected by long-term poverty and financial insecurity to understand the barriers these communities face in accessing Council services and support.
- Signpost families to the Income Maximisation Team, which does a brilliant job of securing benefits for residents who are entitled to them. The team helped residents claim 6.2 million annual benefits last financial year.
- Continue to support and make budget decisions that will allow more ex-right-to-buy homes to be purchased, reducing the council's cost in temporary accommodation.
I look forward to seeing you at the selection meeting.
Best Wishes, Gulcin Ozdemir
