Gustavo Espina

Gustavo Adolfo Espina Salguero (November 26, 1946 – October 23, 2024) was a Guatemalan politician remembered for his dedication to the country, his vocation for public service, and his role during a pivotal moment in the nation’s democratic history. He was born in Santa Catarina Mita, Jutiapa, Guatemala, and from a young age showed interest in public affairs and strengthening state institutions.

In 1991, after an active political career, he was elected Vice President of the Republic of Guatemala, a position he held until 1993 during the presidency of Jorge Serrano Elías. Prior to becoming vice president, Espina served as a congressman representing the department of Escuintla and was active in the country’s legislative life as a member of the Movimiento de Acción Solidaria (MAS) party.

During his vice presidency, he played a key role in a transitional phase of Guatemalan politics. His position within the Executive branch was instrumental in supporting government policies amid a complex and challenging national context.

After stepping away from public life, Espina retired from active politics. Those who knew him highlight his strong character, his unwavering commitment to Guatemala, and his involvement in a significant phase of the country’s institutional development.
