Gustavo Alberto Guerreiro Seabra Leitão Cardoso (born 1969) is a Portuguese sociologist mainly associated with studies in the fields of networked communication, journalism and the Internet.

He is a full professor of Communication Sciences at ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon.

LIFE

Cardoso was politically active in the students movement in the nineties. A students union political movement that marked the portuguese political life of the early nineties and where many of the Portuguese contemporary artists, journalists, politicians, academics and professionals forged strong civic ties. In 1994 he finished his degree in Management at ISCTE, a year later he simultaneously enrolled in the Master in European Studies at the same university and was invited by President Jorge Sampaio to be one the youngest presidential advisers of the Portuguese democratic history.

During his 10 years in office (1995-2005), as adviser for education, science and youth policies, Cardoso developed also an intense research and scientific activity leading to the collaboration with Fausto Colombo, Manuel Castells and many other scholars.

He finished his Phd in Sociology in 2005 and in 2009 he was nominated member of the Young Global Leaders network of the World Economic Forum. Cardoso holds also a post-degree by the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in Global Leadership.

Cardoso, between 2006 and 2011 was Vice-President of the LUSA, the Portuguese News Agency, and is since 2006 the Director of the Portuguese Media observatory, OberCom.

Since 2015 he has been directing the PhD Program in Communication Sciences at ISCTE-IUL and the Graduate Program in Journalism at ISCTE-IUL. He has been an adviser in several international and national organizations, among them the Portuguese National Institute of Statistics ( INE). Furthermore, he is a member of "The Crisis of Europe" research network, managed by the College d'Études Mondiales, Paris, that aims to investigate the changes taking place in European societies.

He has a column in the UP Magazine and holds a weekly appointment in the TVI television broadcaster.

He was awarded the condecoration of Great Official of the Order of the Infante D. Henrique in 2005 for services rendered to the Portuguese Republic.

After more than 20 years of science and organizational management, he is currently one of the potential candidates to become ISCTE-IUL Rector.
