Gustav’s farm and residence is where he has been training puppies for the past 20 years. The training school is highly respected amongst the community and Gustav has a reputation for turning around even the most naughty dogs.
“I wasn’t sure what was going on at first, but I knew it was bad. The temper of these dogs was just terrible.”
Gustav is speaking to me about a recent event that has changed his training school and career.
Six months ago, Gustav received a new group of young puppies from a few of the locals in Glasgow. His training school is the first place many farmers bring their dogs to have them shaped into working farm dogs. These puppies seemed different to Gustav however.
The young puppies aggression was strange and unfounded. Gustav knows personally many of the families that brought him these dogs and could not understand why these puppies where acting out so horribly.
The first red flag was when one of his long time customers called Gustav up late one afternoon, sounding confused and distraught, explaining that her two Collie pups where fighting so frequently that she feared for their lives.
“I knew something was wrong…it was just hard to pin point it until what happened that next day.”
Strolling the lawns of his training school he points to a small fenced off area towards the back of the house. This is where the puppy training classes where conducted and this, he tells me, is where it all made sense.
It was a generally routine class for Gustav until two of the pups began fighting. The smaller female in the fight went into a seizure and that is when Gustav pieced it together.
“Inbreeding is something that doesn’t happen too much with farm dogs. These are sheep dogs, not show dogs. I couldn’t understand what was going on, but after the dog with the seizure… I was certainly sure that as the case.”
