Peer, Assistance, Leadership, and Service (PALS): a program I was a part of for the past two years. Going into high school, I knew I wanted to apply for this program, but I did not know the impact that it would have on me at the time.
As an officer and member of PALS, I had the opportunity to serve at local events in my community and mentor an elementary school student by creating activities to teach him about service, kindness, leadership, and respect. I enjoyed being creative and teaching the lessons uniquely, such as by doing a craft or scavenger hunt. My favorite project that I did with the student was a secret spy mission about accountability, where he had to solve clues and riddles that I created to complete the mission.
Being a member of the program taught me the importance of accountability and time management. I came to understand the value of following through with service tasks since even small actions can make a difference. Although my high school schedule (filled with tasks related to PALS, school work, and lacrosse practice) was challenging to manage at times, I learned the importance of staying organized in order to fulfill my commitments. My positive experience in PALS has sparked my desire to participate in a service organization at UGA. Being an out-of-state student, I believe this will be a great way to connect with my new community and meet other students on campus who share my passion for service.
