Growing up I have never had my own “identity”. Ironically when I was born, I had another one of me come out a minute later. Yes, I am a twin and not fraternal but I have an identical twin sister. Don’t get me wrong, being a twin has its perks such as having someone who looks just like and having a built-in best friend, but it just also comes with its flaws. It was always a series of questions comparing my sister and I about common traits in our lives. This included questions such as, “who’s smarter” or “who’s more athletic”.

When people look at my sister and I on the outside, they are so intrigued by the fact that two people can look so much alike so they try to figure out something that sets the two of us apart through these questions. However, due to the fact that we were asked the same things about three times a day, we ended up coming up with a similar answer, which was “We are about the same in everything”. Ever since we were little we have done everything and gone almost everywhere together and then once college hit we went to two different colleges and had to find who we were as an individual.

Since then, I have found my own friends and my own activities to do without being compared. I would say that I liked being away from her in a sense, but I still catch myself calling her almost every night to update her on what happened the previous day. Therefore, while being a twin comes with flaws, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
