Walaa Hamam
Walaa abu Hamam is a Palestinian Photographer born and raised in the city of ACRE year 1988. she grew up in the crowded buildings and small Alleys of the old city, surrounded by the sea. Born into the third generation of the Palestinian NAKBA inside of ISRAEL, Abu Hamam is one of the native Palestinian-Arabs that form 21% of the population of Israel.
As a little girl, her parents could not overlook her talent every time she draw. A talent that was nurtured and fed with her curiosity and supported by the family. As the years passed, Abu Hamam found a new passion that helped her express thoughts, feelings and ideas in a magical way needless for words. She became more related to her camera and so the urge to become a photographer grew stronger. In 2007 she decided to take the next step and attended "The Academy of WIZO" in Haifa where she got her degree in photography.
In her earliest works, Abu Hamam related to different subjects that affected the daily life of the Arab minority inside of Israel. She photographed various demonstrations that took place inside the occupied parts of Palestine in addition to documentary and studio photography. Gradually, she began to concentrate on subjects that affected women of the Arab society, And decided to start her career at the year 2009 through out her first gallery "Revolutionize" an exhibition against sexual assault and abuse. Abu Hamam tried to give us a closer look to the cruel, savage and inhumane acts women get exposed to as a result of sexual abuse. Photographing bold and harsh photos using only her body to work with. The exhibition was displayed in JAFFA and HAIFA.
Currently, Abu Hamam is working on her second gallery that will be hopefully displayed by the end of the year (2014) – "Taboo" .
