I'm a digital editor for international news at NPR. I also write a Wall Street Journal column called "Work in Progress." Previously, I covered Pakistan and Afghanistan for six years as a foreign correspondent for Time Magazine and then landed at National Geographic, where I wrote about archaeology and culture and the value of failure, among other things. This photo is from a December 2013 visit I made while on assignment for National Geographic to Bamiyan, Afghanistan, once home to the famed colossal Buddhas.
