My name is Hannah Jane Lucas, yet another member of the Spring English 1102 class. I am a first-year student here at UGA, which has been interesting to say the least. For one, this is my first ‘normal’ college class I have taken; in other words, English 1102 is the first college course I have not had to attend via zoom- thanks Ms. ‘Rona. Covid college has been interesting to say the least. My days are characterized by an alarming amount of zoom calls, quarantine, whether it be my friends or myself, and having swabs constantly shoved up into my brain. While this is no where close to ideal, I am telling myself it has given my college experience a little extra spice.
An extra piece to my freshman-year experience is that I am a student-athlete. Currently, I ride on UGA’s Equestrian Team. This fact could be surprising to some considering I stand to be an astounding 4’11; just to clarify my family’s gene pool was not on my side in this regard. With that, many think I am a gym dawg, which honestly is the closest I will ever be to being a two sport athlete. While I like to think I am pretty good at riding horses, anything that involves a ball, running, or an ounce of athleticism is not my forte. I have four horses to help keep me sharp on my abilities, but if I start talking about how precious they are I fear I would ramble and simply bore you. Just know, my horses and my dog, Ricky Bobby (yes, the name is from Talladega Nights) are the cutest, sweetest pets around.
I guess there is also the school aspect to college, so I feel obligated to note I recently decided to major in Nutritional Science. Considering I love eating food, cooking food, and talking about food this seemed to be a pretty natural fit. It’s almost as though every time I eat a meal, in a way, I am studying; this is not really that true, but I am at least able to rationalize it in my own head, which at the end of the day is all that matters.
Hopefully, giving some insight into my freshman year here at UGA has shared some of my more defining characteristics. In simpler terms, I am ready for corona to go away (who isn’t), just a bit vertically challenged, ride horses, have a cute dog with a pretty cool name, and love all aspects of food.
