An aspect of my life that is unique to me is that I grew up on the southern coast of Georgia. Living there opened up many opportunities that would not have been available to me if I lived elsewhere. The most interesting of these is that I worked throughout all of high school and a marine biology camp. This camp took place on the beach and taught me many things. Other than chasing kids around the beach, my main responsibility was catching marine animals and being able to educate the kids on them. I, along with help from other counselors, would pull a hundred foot net along the surface floor. In this net we would catch animal such as sharks, butterfly rays, stingrays, and jellyfish. I quickly had to learn how to handle these animals in a safe way so that the kids could see them without getting hurt. There were many instances where I did end up getting slightly injured, but in my option it just made me tougher. For example, the time I got a stingray barb stuck in my foot. That was a rough experience, but I now know how to handle situations like that. Whatever incidents that happen to me while I am working are usually obsolete when I see how excited the kids are. I think working at this camp was a unique experience that has really helped shape me into the person that I am today. I am a cellular biology major and working at this camp helped me to decide that I want to pursue a field related to this.
