Computer hard disk drives store your operating system, programs and/or data. The data is retained when power to the computer is switched off. Faulty hard drives will usually present with the following problem categories:

• Logical Failure (corrupt file system data),

• Electronic Failure (PCB + connector damage),

• Firmware Failure (corrupt drive operating code),

• Media Degradation (magnetic platter surface damage)

• Mechanical Failure (moving part component failure ).

A faulty Solid State Drive (SSD) will typically exhibit storage chip or on-board power component failure.

In most cases the device will not be recognised by the BIOS and the computer will show a black screen.
