FLASHBACK If it was the apple that brought about the downfall of the Adam & Eve couple, you could say it was just the reverse with me, ‘A’ for ‘Apple’ to be precise. After learning my alphabets and language, it was the comic strips in dailies and magazines that kindled the latent desire in me to express myself in words and pictures. The tons of books that I buried in and the zillions of movies I had seen further strengthened my fascination for the written and visual media. Soon after I graduation, I started a monthly youth magazine called ‘Campus Scene’. That was the kick-start to my career in the literal sense. With ‘peanuts’ for budget and non-existent advertising support the magazine was nowhere to go except down the hill in spite of the encouraging reader interest it generated. I managed to run ‘Campus Scene’ for nearly a year before winding it up. So what next… The most obvious thing was advertising and I headed for Bombay (Mumbai) to seek my ‘fortune’ as a copywriter. Write, I did – with a vengeance. Only this time I was making money too! I created brochures, advertising campaigns and scripts for ad films. It was a virtual windfall because I was working both as a regular and freelance copywriter. It lasted a few years, as I had to come back to Hyderabad because of family pressures. In Hyderabad, I joined the Eenadu group of publications as Publicity Executive. I quit my job at the Eenadu group and started freelancing in advertising. While freelancing in advertising, I was servicing some of the blue chip companies in Hyderabad designing and printing all their publicity and stationery items. After a few years I made a mid career shift to what was always in the back of mind – making audio-visual packages for voluntary organizations working on various development issues in rural areas. For over the years I was involved with organizations spread all over Andhra Pradesh and some parts of Karnataka. Today, I confine myself to a few voluntary organizations. That’s because I am in to making short films. Harry Jayanth 402 MANPREETH, 489 ST # 2, HUMAYUN NAGAR, HYDERABAD 500028 INDIA Mobile: 040-9502004939/9246114102 - E Mail: [email protected]
