The founding of the Porton Group by Harvey Boulter in early 2000 was in direct response to an opportunity to commercialize technology invented by UK Ministry of Defence Laboratories. The group has since extended its remit to operate within the venture capital markets as a trusted partner in the commercialization of military technology, and in private equity operations with a number of fund vehicles focusing on the cyber sector.
Partnership with leading Government laboratories is a core essence of the Porton Group’s history; developing and funding technology for military purposes and parallel commercial opportunities. Partnerships incorporate various UK Government public sector research establishments, including Dstl (an agency of the UK Ministry of Defence) and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (the UK Space Centre of Excellence), along with numerous academic organisations such as Cambridge University. Such involvement has given the Porton Group unique access to both new technology and fresh global markets for these opportunities; growing the sector, embracing competition and diversifying to new areas.
The Porton Group has a proud heritage in defence and security, including cyber, encryption technologies, medical diagnostics, biometrics and big data analytics. The group has taken many of these core national security investments to success in the commercial sectors.
With its Communication Security Group (CSG) investment, the group has a particular focus on communication encryption technologies. Both the CSG owned entities Seecrypt (www.seecrypt.com) and Cellcrypt (www.cellcrypt.com) offer secure messaging and voice product suites, and are active with some of the world’s most significant Telcos, Government and commercial organizations world-wide.
With a track record of great experience and an active management approach, the Porton Group continues to build the value of its portfolio by introducing new technologies high growth regions globally.
