Who is Hawemah Smd?
Producer | Sonic Architect | Independent Artist
Luntu Anda Ntsinde, known professionally as Hawemah Smd, is a South African music producer specializing in Afro-house and Gqom. His work is defined by a futuristic approach, pushing the sonic limits of the South African underground.
The Roots of the Sound
Born into a household where music was a constant, Luntu was raised by Luzuko and Nolubabalo Ntsinde in the Durban/Pinetown area. His upbringing was soundtracked by the hum of record players and the clicking of his father’s cassettes. While the house was always loud, Luntu found himself drawn to the noise, developing a lifelong connection to deep, resonant sound.
From Underground Parties to the Studio
His journey into production began in high school, fueled by the raw energy of Durban’s youth culture. He was inspired by iconic events like Xplosion and Good Sundae, as well as the legendary street bash “Pick n Pay Underground”—where Quantum taxis packed into parking lots to blast Gqom through massive sound systems. Hawemah began his career by translating that gritty, high-energy atmosphere into his own unique beats.
Today, Hawemah Smd continues to bridge the gap between nostalgic tribal roots and the future of electronic music, cementing his place as a visionary in the modern scene.
