"Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome".
-Booker T Washington
There were many obstacles to be dealt with when I was growing up, but not one of them discouraged me for my future. In fact, my obstacles did quite the opposite, they inspired me.
I grew up with Cerebral Palsy, and because of this I was forced to spend a large amount of time with medical professionals. People like my Orthopedist, my Therapist and my general Physicians impressed me. There was something about them that I wanted to achieve with my life, and watching them over the years, seeing them help me slowly overcome my physical issues, made me realize I wanted to help people in the same way. They made me want to give back to others what had been so graciously given to me.
Early on I thought I wanted to mirror one of those professions, considering Physical Therapy as a possible career field, I then found a growing interest in Pharmacy, and entered college in hopes of graduating as a pharmacist. However, after a bit of exploration, I found that my real passion laid in Psychology.
Once my Psychology course work started I learned that I had a special interest in Applied Behavioral Analysis. These interests lead me to do extensive personal research on autism, reading anything that I could get my hands on that dealt with the topic.
Since my major change, I have only furthered my enjoyment of working with Autistic children, holding an internship at Children's Service Center and even writing a research project on the subject that is in the process of publication.
I have decided that after I graduate from Wilkes University, with my BA in Psychology this May, I want to further my education and get my degree in ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis). As of now I am looking to hold a job in the psychology field while finishing my graduate degree.
