Hazar Strategy Institute (HASEN) is an independent, non-profit policy institute based in Istanbul focusing on the strategic analysis of the Broader Caspian Region with a vision to become a trusted reference voice in understanding and projecting key policy and research questions in the areas of energy, security, foreign affairs, and economy of the region. HASEN Executive Board and the High Consultation Council are overseeing and guiding the Institute’s research and policy activities. Both platforms include prominent figures from business, academia and policy world.

HASEN runs six major policy programs that are designed to address outstanding research and development questions with a fact-based and multidisciplinary approach that brings together insights and perspectives of people from different backgrounds.

Historically the Caspian Region has been at the crossroads of regional and global trade routes including the Silk Road that connected major production centers and markets. Caspian Transit Corridor Program developed by the Institute is designed to provide key data in this context and serve as a debate/convention platform of public and private stakeholders that are involved in interregional trade and transportation.

Another strategic area of the Institute’s work is concentrated on region’s energy potential and perspectives. Southern Gas Corridor Program deals with the analysis of regional political-economy of energy resources such as delivery of Caspian natural gas to Europe. On the other hand, Istanbul Energy Program has a more of country focus specifically Turkey.

There have been significant infrastructure investments in both creating and upgrading regional energy systems that have vital importance to the region. In this regard, Critical Infrastructure Protection Program created by the Institute is expected to contribute to learning best practices and exchanging experiences in the field of CIP that can be conveyed to both public and private enterprises with an academic and practical approach.

Regional security and resolution of frozen conflicts are also at the center of the Institute’s research interest. International Security Policy Program is projected to come up with policy recommendations and academic studies that can contribute to the understanding of regional security environment and emerging challenges to the regional stability.
