In 1993, Anthony Mazlish, founder of the Healthy Back Store, was working as an investment plan manager spending long hours in uncomfortable office chairs that exacerbated pain and stress to the lumbar region of his back. After searching unsuccessfully for a retail store that might be able to meet his needs, Mazlish decided to take matters into his own hands and he established the Healthy Back Store in Maryland in 1994 with the goal of providing customers with high-end ergonomic products.

The humble beginnings of the Healthy Back Store are in sharp contrast to its early success. After the first year of business, Mazlish was able to expand the brand by adding two other locations in the Metro D.C. area. The response was tremendous and it was made clear that the market was ripe for the business to take root in other parts of the nation. Thus, the company has pushed beyond its original territory and there are currently over 20 stores in six states. There are also two outlet locations located in Maryland and Virginia.
