The garden was created in 2012 by several tenants in the building where I live. The original seven people spent many, many hours digging two feet into the sod and moving it (one wheelbarrowful at a time), adding enriched soil and planting vegetables on one side of a weed-filled lawn.

The past two years have been a time of learning. None of us really knew what we were doing when we started. None of us had any idea how much work it would be - those pesky weeds keep finding their way back in, along with the grass and some sort of viney thing that I have come to dislike intensely!

But I know the effort has been worth it when I'm chopping up kale for dinner, kale that I've just picked off a plant I grew from a seed. Tomatoes seem to taste better when you've watched them grow and I'll never buy pesto again, not when I can make it with the beautiful basil from the front yard.
