I approach the creation of concrete sculptures in a way that incorporates as much spontaneity as possible with the medium of concrete. This is accomplished by having a standard monolithic table-like form that can be changed in subtle or dramatic ways. Recombining bases with tops, changing angles or making large assemblages offers countless compositional possibilities.
Surface design starts in the initial mold but as the piece is finished: cutting, drilling, inlaying, and pigment slurries ( applying mixtures of wet cement and pigment) allow me to use the concrete as one would paint on a canvas. The final surface texture is achieved by wet diamond grinding (polishing) and sealing with a natural wax.
Each piece has a welded iron armature for strength and every precaution is taken to maintain durability and stability over the lifetime of the piece.
Part of the joy of working with concrete in this way is that one has the opportunity to respond to and change the sculpture throughout the whole process, from inception to manufacturing and on to the final assembling.
