Hemra Nida

Journalist in Turkey

I began my career in journalism in 2009, working as a reporter and editor for various media outlets. Since 2016, I have continued my professional life as an independent journalist.

In 2018, I started producing video news for Euronews, a process that led me to documentary filmmaking. My first documentary, "The Exchanged Roma," was screened at international festivals. Subsequently, my documentary "Being a Roma Woman During the Pandemic" won an award at the 11th European Union Human Rights Short Film Competition.

Under the umbrella of the Roma Dialogue Network, I have organized workshops to enhance the digital skills and media literacy of Rom, Dom, Lom, and Abdal communities, and have conducted human rights campaigns. For this work, I was deemed worthy of receiving the European Commission's EU Award for Roma Integration in the Western Balkans and Turkey in the "Digital Agenda" category in 2023.

In 2012, I participated in international humanitarian aid work as a volunteer in Africa, followed by similar work in Asia in 2015. During the pandemic and the earthquake period, I actively worked in the field, organizing humanitarian aid campaigns for Roma groups under the leadership of the Zero Discrimination Association.

I continue to contribute to social change and the struggle for rights by applying my journalistic background in the field of civil society.
