Dr. Marisa Herrera
Seattle, Washington, United States
As the Executive Director for Community Building and Inclusion at the University of Washington, I leverage my knowledge of inclusive practices, human resource management, marketing, operations management, university budgeting and systems architecture in order to increase efficiencies in the areas of diversity engagement. I oversee a student-union style facility that serves the needs of a large research I institution in Seattle, Washington with over 35,000 students. Our center is the largest cultural center on a college campus in the nation and is a 15.5 million dollar LEED certified Gold building, with a 1 million dollar operating budget that provides direct service to 5,000 students ranging from underrepresented minority (URM), first generation, low-income and students of color.
My personal experiences working alongside Archbishop Desmond Tutu, extensive travel experience circumnavigating the world in 2010, and expertise in the globalization of higher education, add to my orientation towards being a leader in the creation of inclusive space on college campuses. I have served on several national advisory boards including the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education, College Board Native American Student Advocacy Institute, the Washington State Coalition for Undocumented Students, Girl Scouts and The Center for Inclusive Entrepreneurship.
