Biography

The Icelandic tenor Hjalti Eythor Vilhjalmsson was born in Reykjavik, Iceland on May 28, 1981. A lover of classical music from a young age, he studied singing with Ms. Ingveldur Yr Jonsdottir, mezzo-soprano, from the age of 20. From 2005 he studied with Mr. Gunnar Gudbjornsson, tenor, at the Sigurdur Demetz Singing School in Reykjavik, from where he graduated in 2008. Hjalti went on to study voice with Mr. David Bartleet, B.A.; Dip. London Opera Centre; Cert. Educ. in England. In autumn of 2009, Hjalti moved to Vienna, Austria, where he has since studied voice with Antonio Carangelo at the Carangelo Belcanto Academy as well as doing master classes with him and Prof. Magdalena Blahusiakova, soprano.

Hjalti has performed M'appari' tutt' amor (Lyonel in Martha by Von Flotow) and Che gelida manina (Rodolfo in La Bohème by Puccini) at Gala concerts with the Karlsbad Symphony Orhcestra conducted by František Drs. at The International Antonin Dvorak Vocal Centre, in Karlsbad, Czech Republic. He has also performed Una furtiva lagrima (Nemorino in L'Elisir d'Amore by Donizetti) and En fermant les yeux (des Manon by Massenet) at The Carangelo Belcanto Academy Christmas concert in Palais Todesco, Vienna, Austria and he sang the role of Monastatos (Die Zauberflöte by Mozart) at a semi-academic staging with orchestra conducted by Keith Reed in Salakirkja Reykjavik.

As a member of the Reykjavik Opera Choir from 2002-2007 Hjalti sang in several concerts around the world including Beethoven's 9th Symphony, in St. Petersburg, Russia with the St.Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Elijah by Mendelsohn conducted by Gardar Cortes in Carnegie Hall, New York, USA, and with the Iceland Symphonic Orchestra conducted by David Gockley at the concert of Placido Domingo in Reykjavík, Iceland.
