Hewitt Joyner Jr. was born in Boston (Roxbury) Massachusetts. He attended Roxbury Memorial High School (Boys), held an athletic scholarship to Delaware State University, where he received his bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education. He received a Mott Fellowship at San Jose State University where he also earned his MA in Education Administration & Community Education. Mr. Hewitt has held professional positions as a teacher in Boston Public Schools; Currently CEO/Founder of the Joyner/Payne Youth Service Agency. An organization dedicated to serving the needs of African American Youth and Families in Santa Clara County. Executive Director of the Black Council on Alcoholism of San Jose and later the Black Council of Santa Clara County, Inc. that was the first full service Alcoholism Rehabilitation Program for Black People in the United States; Superintendent of Continuous Quality Improvement and Organizational Development of the San Jose Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department. Founder/Executive Director, Santa Cruz West Mission Street Health Center. His awards include Delaware State University Athletic Hall of Fame, 3 California Parks and Recreation Society Excellence Awards, and the Martin Luther King "Good Neighbor" Award.
