When analysing my beliefs about teaching and learning, I observed that teaching children in a language other than their mother tongue shows to disrupt their cognitive ability and interferes with their learning process. The learners are unable to show high order thinking because of language barriers. In a way, I can point to a famous quote by Mandela, that if you speak to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his mind, but if you speak to him in his own language, that goes to his heart. Despite every single policy one can come up with, no matter what teachers are enforce or parents do, learners are going to think what they want to think, learn what they want to learn and speak what they want to speak, as countless generations before them did. I believe my role as a teacher would be to nurture learners so that they can achieve their self- actualization. I will let them construct their own learning.
